Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,
I enjoy being in classrooms throughout the day. One of my favorite times to visit is during Readers’ Workshop. We have just recently started a focus on nonfiction texts in all grade levels. Nonfiction texts offer unique challenges to readers. The vocabulary is more challenging. There are text structures and features that can be confusing. Frequently we find that students need to be reading nonfiction books that are easier than their “just right” fiction book choices.  Whether it is fiction or nonfiction, we want to feed our readers with books!

Establishing a daily habit of reading at home is one of the most important things you can do as parents. Reading impacts every area of the curriculum. The table below illustrates the research on reading.  I encourage you to make sure your child has a book in his/her backpack at all times. Our kids have busy lives. A book in the backpack makes it easy for your children to squeeze in reading every chance they get!
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt
