Principal's Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos Elementary,

The whole team at Los Ranchos feels fortunate to be in the business of educating your children. We are are committed to nurturing and supporting the whole child. As elementary educators we are focused on the academic, social and emotional growth of our students. School safety is also a top priority.

I know school safety is on the minds of all parents. I want to assure you that protocols and procedures for emergencies are in place. These procedures have been developed with law enforcement and experts in the field of school safety. Protocols are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the most current safety practices. Our staff is trained in safety protocols and we have drills for our students throughout the year for emergency, evacuation and sheltering. These drills test communication among and between classes, offices, and help student become familiar with emergency procedures. This is done often, and with minimal disruption to the education of our students.

Our School Safety Plan is also in the office for parents to review at any time. If you have any questions or want to talk on this topic, I am available to you.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us. Children are our most precious gifts. We take the responsibility of ensuring their safety very seriously.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

FREE Wisdom Parenting Workshop

February 27h at 4:30pm in the Los Ranchos Library

This one hour workshop will explore how the practice of mindfulness can support parents to stay meaningfully connected to themselves and their families, even as the demands and complexities of life increase. The practice of mindfulness teaches us to stay more present to ourselves and our children and increases our capacity to respond rather than react to the challenges of life. Mindfulness also grows our ability to meet conflict with compassion and increases our capacity for self-awareness, humor and love. This workshop is an introduction to mindfulness and how to practice it, as well as a discussion on how to specifically apply mindfulness to the rich experience of parenting.

Deborah Halpern, MEd, MATP, spent 8 years practicing and studying yoga and meditation full-time in retreat. She has earned master’s degrees in both Education and Psychology and has taught mindfulness practices to both children and adults. She is an instructional assistant at Los Ranchos!

School Nurse Note

Allergy Season is here and students are coming to the health room with itchy, red, watery eyes.

Tips to provide comfort and prevent lost classroom time.
1.  If your child routinely takes allergy medicine during the allergy season, be sure that they take the medicine before they leave the house.
2.  If your student needs allergy medication at school, we have a medication form available.
3.  Reduce exposure to allergens: Have your child wash hands and change clothing after playing outside.
4.  Caution your student not to sit on the grass at school if this is an allergen for them.
5.  Keep windows closed when pollen counts are high.

Love Letters to Parents
Can life feel a little overwhelming sometimes?  Do you ever feel like parenting is a challenge?  Not sure you fully understand the pressures and anxieties that kids feel or have a grasp of their social, emotional, academic and relational landscape? Ever feel like other parents have it all figured out?  Does your child's reliance on digital  technology mystify you?  Seeking the balance of being a parent and being an individual within a family can be a struggle.  Well, you're not alone.

Perhaps more than ever, parents today need peer support to navigate the challenges inherent in  every developmental stage and maintain healthy balance.  We know that it takes a village to raise a child and are fortunate when we can rely on family and friends.  Life is always going to present us with amazing highs and also some incredible lows.  how we choose to navigate the journey is persona, but it's reassuring to know every parent  is on a similar path, and comforting to know that no one has it completely figured out.

We live in a big, complex world that requires us to keep learning. We don't have the answers, but as role models for our kids, we hope to show them how to navigate uncertainties, ride the waves, manage stress, treat others, and live health, meaningful lives.  Our kids, our peers, our community, and our honest and genuine conversations bring barriers down and helps us create a community of caring.

We are information gathers, parents seeking tools and resources to help guide us on our journey, and human beings who ultimately just want to raise other happy, health, caring and thoughtful human beings.

We are very excited to ride the waves or navigate the journey with you!

Celebrating being perfectly imperfect,

Principal's Message
Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos Elementary,
It has been a busy week at Los Ranchos. Valentine's Day is always one of the most exciting days of the year. It was particularly fun to see our second graders dressed in their party outfits for the Valentine Tea. It was a memory making day!

We also had a fabulous Rockets and Robots assembly this week by Captain Bob Redman. Students were fully engaged in his explanation of space exploration and robots. Your kids may want to learn more by going on his website Rockets-and-Robots. Thank you PTA for funding this fun and informative learning opportunity.

We have some minimum days coming up, starting next week on Thursday and Friday. Please plan for extra time when picking-up. Our kindergarteners will be getting picked up too. That adds 60 more students who are not used to the increased traffic. Your patience and planning are appreciated.

Have a great three day weekend.
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

mindfulSLO
Welcome!
We’re excited to share a project we started with SLOHS in the Principal’s Newsletter- a weekly parent-to-parent piece we write as mindfulSLO. Each week we will share a wealth of resources, research-based practices, and links to useful online tools to raise awareness, help build resilience and offer support to navigate the waves of life and parenting.
mindfulSLO was created in the process of researching, connecting, seeking resources, asking questions, wanting to fill in gaps, and needing to better understand the world, needs and social-emotional landscape of students today. Our writing is a local offering of our research (Connect Be Well) and our way of helping our community connect and create dialogue between parents, students, and our teaching community. Both of us live in SLO, have children in the district, and have lived in other places. One of us grew up on the central coast, the other in the mid-Atlantic. One of us went to Poly, the other to UCSB.  We both have three children, now one of us has two. We are real people with many questions, a willingness to learn, and a need to be part of the solution.
Sometimes it’s hard to share with others or open up, so through our letters, we’ve chosen to share what we’re thinking and talking about with you. Our pieces are love letters to ourselves- ideas, resources and tools that help us ride the waves of parenting.  We hope they bring you the big hug we give ourselves in writing them and validate your feelings and experience, so you feel connected.
Parenting is challenging, and (As parents,) the best we can do is accept and love our imperfect selves, while supporting each other in the process.  We are choosing to celebrate being perfectly imperfect and encourage others to do the same. Together, we hope to create a culture of acceptance, collaborate and learn along the way, and initiate dialogue with each other.

Local Control Accountability (LCAP) Survey:
All school districts in California are required to develop a three-year Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) that describes how state funds will be used to improve student academic achievement. The LCAP must incorporate how the district is spending its supplementary funds, 4.5 million dollars, to meet the needs of students with greater challenges, including English learners, socio-economically disadvantaged students, and foster/homeless youth. In San Luis Coastal Unified School District (SLCUSD), we have constructed an LCAP that takes those supplementary funds along with general fund dollars (federal, state, and local) to implement five focus areas established by our Board of Trustees. The overall LCAP budget is approximately 6 million dollars out of our 92 million dollar budget. Engaging parents, students, community members, and school employees in developing, reviewing, and supporting implementation of the LCAP is critical to its success.

Please take a few minutes to complete the LCAP Survey. We value and appreciate the input from parents, staff, and community. The feedback will be used to revise our LCAP for 2018-2019. The LCAP Survey will be open until March 23rd.

Principal's Message
Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos Elementary,

If you have a child in 4 - 6th grade you have probably heard about STEAM. STEAM is about the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Over the last couple of years we continue to develop more and more meaningful STEAM opportunities for all of our students. Many of our buddy classes work collaboratively on STEAM projects. Our 5th and 6th graders are all engaged in rotations in robotics and other STEAM activities and our Science curriculum integrates STEAM activities into each unit.  On March 22 we will celebrate STEAM Night at Los Ranchos. There will be lots of fun interactive opportunities:  robots, icehouses, bridges, waterwheels and more.  Every grade level will have examples of their projects. Mark your calendars. It is going to be a fun evening!

Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

DENTAL SCREENING PROGRAM

As part of our school health program, a volunteer dentist from the Central Coast Dental Society will provide dental screenings at your child’s school.  This year we will be screening TK, Kindergarten, third and fifth grade students on February 15th.  If you do not want your student screened please notify the teacher with a note for the nurse.
The dental screening consists of a simple visual inspection of your child’s teeth and will not involve the use of x-rays or other dental equipment.  This screening does not replace an in-office dental examination by your family dentist.
A letter will be sent home only if the screening identifies a potential dental problem.
If you do not have a family dentist and you need help in obtaining dental care, you may contact:
  • Central Coast Dental Society: 544-1113             Public Health Department: 781-5564
