Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,

We were sorry to postpone the Walk-a-thon Friday, but it was great to see the rain! We look forward to a fun filled event on Wednesday, November 3rd. We hope you can still come out to cheer on the Roadrunners. An hour is a long time, especially for our younger students. Your cheers make all the difference!

On Monday, November 14th we have another fun event for the whole family. Kyle’s Cartoon Platoon will be presenting a very engaging assembly to all students during the day. Families are invited to come and join the fun for an evening presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room. You and your children will learn some cartoon strategies. This was such a huge success last year the PTA is sponsoring him again. Thank you Los Ranchos PTA!

Have a safe and fun Halloween!
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,

The Walk-a-thon is almost here! On Friday, October 28th, Los Ranchos Roadrunners will be walking, skipping, running, and sometimes cartwheeling around the quarter mile course  for a full hour. The Walk-a-thon is a fun event for all. An hour is a long time but kids are inspired by the encouragement of each other, their big buddies, parents, grandparents and friends who line the course providing water, cheers and high fives. Ultimately the goal of the Walk-a-thon is to be a successful fundraiser. The money raised pays for countless materials, enrichment programs and some essential supports. I appreciate that our PTA sponsors such a fun and memorable event for raising money.

I hope you can join us for the cheering and the picnic lunch that follows.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,

The Buddy Bench has finally arrived and students are already loving it! It is bright and red and inviting for students needing a buddy. The idea of a Buddy Bench was started by a first grader in Pennsylvania. He had heard about it when researching an elementary school in Germany. That was in 2013. Since then, Buddy Benches have been popping up everywhere. We appreciate our Los Ranchos PTA funding ours. It has already been a great addition to our playground and our focus on connecting students and building community. Thank you PTA!

The first edition of the Roadrunner Times, our Los Ranchos newspaper, is hot off the press. Los Ranchos writers have been gathering every Thursday at lunch to write interviews, surveys, guides, updates and much more. It is a great team of students. This is open to all 4th - 6th graders. They also welcome contributing writers who may not have the time to participate on a weekly basis. Enjoy your own copy of the Roadrunner Times by clicking on the link in the newsletter. I want to thank all the students who have participated. We look forward to many more editions.  A special thanks goes to Los Ranchos parent, Tracy Robertson, who is offering amazing support to the process.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

Counselor’s Corner
Dear Parent/s,

Recently there has been reports of scary clown stories circulating among students. Here are some guidelines/ideas for supporting your child this Halloween season. First and foremost, reassure your child that s/he is safe. Rather than tell them to "not be afraid" inform them of what a "hoax" is and share the "myths" that you may have grown up with (Bigfoot, Zombies, Vampires). Explain that what is on the internet does not mean it's the truth. Reassure them that even though people are dressing up in such costumes, it doesn't mean that they are going to hurt you.

Set your child up for success by going with them when they go trick or treating. If their fear shows up before bedtime, refrain from saying things like "don't be a baby or a scaredy cat".  Instead, practice deep breathing with them and positive self talk such as "I am safe".

Another practice is to walk around the house with them and show that all doors are locked and windows are secure. Limiting or refraining from spooky/scarey movies and or books will also help in maintaining a calm state before bedtime. If you need further support, please don't hesitate to contact me at school.

Sincerely,
Mary Kay Stratton, Counselor

Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,

Field trips offer many rich learning opportunities that we cannot provide in the classroom. All of our students enjoy a variety of field trips each year. Usually they are connected to the grade level curriculum. But, they also include experiences in the Arts at the PAC. This week our fourth graders were able to visit the San Salvador in Morro Bay. The San Salvador is a replica of Cabrillo’s ship who sailed up the Pacific Coast in 1542. Fourth graders were taken back in time and learned details about life on a ship 500 years ago that they couldn’t learn in a textbook. Our students have these opportunities thanks to you and your financial support during our PTA fundraiser. Thank you!

Visitors on Campus
If you are on campus at any time of the day, even before school, we need you to stop in the office to sign in as a visitor and to get a visitor sticker.  As you know, one of our top priorities is safety.  If you sign in and have a badge, we can better identify adults on campus which helps us keep everyone safe.
