Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,

It was great to see so many families for Open House! The excitement was palpable. Students were eager to share and parents were an enthusiastic audience. As educators, we deeply appreciate the support and participation in your children’s education. Together, we make a great team.

We have some exciting changes for next year. As many of you know, Miss Finn will be moving on to teaching in Thailand. We will miss her. She has been a dedicated teacher at Los Ranchos Elementary. We look forward to hearing about her new adventures.  As a result, we will have a 5th grade opening. I am happy to announce that Mr. Becker has agreed to take his enthusiasm for learning and teaching to 5th grade. Mr. Becker spent many years in 5th and 6th grade. He is looking forward to returning to 5th grade students and 5th grade curriculum. Ms. Johnson and Mr. Becker are going to make a great 5th grade team.

This leaves an opening in 4th grade. We are fortunate to welcome Ms. Wagner to this position. Ms. Wagner is a loved and talented teacher from another elementary school in the district.  She will be partnering with Mrs. McMillen and Mrs. Phelan. 4th graders are going to have a fun and engaging year with this 4th grade team.

And last but not least, there is one more change. Next year we will have two classes in kindergarten and three classes in 1st grade. We are very fortunate to have Ms. Baele move up into 1st grade. She is a talented and experienced teacher with many years as a 1st grade reading specialist. During those years she worked closely with Mrs. Harper and Mrs. Aguilar.  The three of them will make a wonderful team.

We are fortunate to have a staff of talented and dedicated teachers. Teachers will be making classlists soon for next year. Please read the information below to learn more about the complex process we use to create class lists. We strive to maximize the learning experience and environment for each student. We appreciate your confidence in the process and in our teachers who know their students academically, socially and emotionally.

Have a wonderful three day weekend!
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

Class lists for 2016-2017

The teachers at Los Ranchos place children in classrooms according to the best interest of all students, both individually and collectively. We pay careful attention to creating balanced classes by considering the following factors:
  • student’s academic ability
  • student’s behaviors
  • student/student compatability
  • gender balance
  • individual student needs
This is a complex process. Our goal is to create classroom communities where the combination of students help to  build positive and productive learning environments. Our teachers know our students well. We appreciate your trust in this process.
We understand, however,  that there are circumstances known to parents/guardians that would be helpful for school staff when making placements. If you want to share this information with us, we will happily take it into consideration. Please complete this form or pick it up in the office. The form should be turned into the Los Ranchos office by Tuesday, May 31.

Principal’s Message
Dear Friends and Familes of Los Ranchos,
IMG_6416.JPG
We have an enthusiastic and dedicated group of sixth graders in the band his year.  Some have been coming to school at 7:30am and some stay late.  Their dedication and hard work has paid off.  This last week they had two performances.  One was at SLO High School with 100 other sixth graders.  The second performance was here at school.  Both performances were outstanding.  I want to thank Ms. Lake, our music teacher, for her dedication to this program and to our students.
We are excited about Open House this Thursday, May 26.  It is a wonderful time for our students to share their work from across the curriculum, for teachers to connect with parents, and for friends and families to catch up. We hope to see you here!

Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

This spring, the Y has experienced labor shortages at many of their childcare sites.  These shortages are being experienced throughout the country due to the strong economy and are also being experienced by Y’s throughout California.  While they have been able to provide adequate staffing to their programs to date, it has been a great strain on their staff team and on their operations.  It is for these reasons our Y is making adjustments to some of their childcare programs.

As of June 1st, 2016, the Los Ranchos Before School Program will operate on Mondays only.  Before school care will no longer be offered Tuesdays-Fridays.  Additionally, the Transitional Kindergarten Program will no longer be offered.

The Y greatly apologizes for the inconvenience or challenges this change might cause for you and your family.  This change will continue for the foreseeable future.  They will evaluate their ability to reinstate for the next academic school year.

If you need to contact the Y with questions or concerns you may call them at (805) 543-8235.

Library Reminder:
Remember that all library books are due the week of May 23 - 27. Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,
It gives me great pleasure to announce Roseann Horner as the Teacher of the year for Los Ranchos Elementary. Mrs. Horner is being recognized for commitment to collaboration with colleagues, her dedication to buildings relationships with parents and her tireless commitment to supporting students. We are so fortunate to have her as a member of our Los Ranchos community.
Students had a great time at the Battle of the Books today.  Over 100 students participated. It was an impressive show of student collaboration and close reading over the school year. Texas was the winning team with India as a close second. Texas team members included: Charlie, Jack, Miley, Alexander, Lucy and Ava.  I want to thank Donna Withey who has organized this event for the last two years. Melissa Allen and Barbara Beckett have volunteered to head it up next year.
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt

Principal’s Message

Dear Friends and Families of Los Ranchos,

We had a fabulous Bike Parade on Friday, April 29. Students in every grade participated with a wide variety of colorful costumes. There was a chicken, a hot dog, many superheroes and an assortment of other crazy costumes zipping along the bike course. Thanks to the Moore family, we had three additional ramps for the event. These were a great addition to the bike course. Art’s Cyclery was set up early tuning up bikes for students.  In addition, Tiffany Emry organized an army of parent volunteers to stand guard at tricky turns and corners. Big kids got to cheer on our younger students and then we switched. A special thanks goes to Tony Evans and Paul Reinhardt for organizing and facilitating the event.

School safety is a top priority at Los Ranchos. We have safety drills every month to ensure that students know what is expected of them in the event of the unexpected. Our parent community serves as another important part of our safety network. When something seems out of sorts, you let us know and we appreciate that. We are lucky to live in a safe community and your connection to each other and to your school keeps us even safer.

We have been so spoiled this week during Teacher/Staff Appreciation. You have showered us with gifts, spoiled us with delicious treats, lunches and beverages and expressed your appreciation in  hundreds of creative and thoughtful ways. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity.
Sincerely,
Marlie Schmidt
